As Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Research Infrastructure), Professor Ian Smith plays a University-wide leadership role. He is responsible for:
- managing the development and implementation of infrastructure strategy
- investing in leading-edge infrastructure and equipment to support Monash University's research aspirations.
Professor Ian Smith was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Research Infrastructure) in 2010.
Previously at Monash University, Professor Smith was a National Health and Medical Research Council-funded Professorial Fellow in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Deputy Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.
Professor Smith's research applies proteomics technologies to study proteases involved in brain and cardiovascular function. This research is globally recognised and has been published in over 200 international journals.
Professor Smith collaborates and consults widely with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies and has filed many patents. He is a co-founder of a publicly listed proteomics-based biotechnology company, and sits on many national and international committees and advisory boards.
