Inclusive teaching practice

Inclusive teaching involves a shift in focus from content to the context of learning and it responds to a diversity of learning styles. The purpose of inclusive teaching is to anticipate difference and give all students the best possible opportunity to learn. Notions of inclusive practice should be considered in all aspects of teaching, from course and curriculum design through to delivery and assessment.

Inclusive practices for students with a disability

If you know, or suspect that a student has a disability please be mindful of the following:

  • students with the same medical condition or disability might have different requirements; and a student's requirements for accommodations might also fluctuate or vary over time.
  • staff who have concerns about the performance of a student who has declared a disability should consult with them about the potential barriers and possible solutions.
  • don’t assume that because a student has a disability that they require academic accommodations. If you think they might require assistance it is appropriate to ask them.
  • students are sometimes reluctant to discuss the barriers they experience because they are concerned about maintaining their privacy.
  • when a student is struggling due to suspected disability there is an obligation for you to discuss your concerns with them. The discussion can be about their academic progress, what needs to change to improve it, and the various services available to assist them. You should not make any reference or enquiry as to the nature of the disability or medical condition which the student might have unless they voluntarily provide such information to you.
  • students may provide you with an eligibility letter from the Disability Liaison Unit (DLU) outlining their recommended academic accommodations. You are welcome to contact the DLU to discuss these accommodations.
