Guest Speaker - Cordelia FineCordelia Fine is a Melbourne-based academic psychologist and writer who studied Experimental Psychology at Oxford University, followed by a Master of Philosophy in Criminology at Cambridge University. She was awarded a PhD in Psychology from the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at University College London. Cordelia’s interests lie in exploring the social, ethical and philosophical implications of social psychological and neuroscientific research. Coining the term ‘neurosexism’ to describe how old fashioned gender stereotypes pervade neuroscientific research and popular culture, Cordelia argues that no major neurological differences between the sexes can be found. Instead, the differences between men and women are currently better explained by cultural stereotypes and social expectations. She argues that claims of ‘hardwired’ differences between the sexes are not harmless, but can reinforce those stereotypes and expectations in self-fulfilling ways that help to sustain sex inequalities. Her latest book, Delusions of Gender: The Real Science Behind Sex Differences, was short-listed for the Victorian Premier's Literary Award for Non-Fiction, the Best Book of Ideas Prize 2011 and the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize for Literature 2010. Cordelia is also the author of A Mind of its Own: How Your Brain Distorts and Deceives, and has written for numerous publications including The Monthly, New Statesman, New York Times and Wall Street Journal. Cordelia is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Ethical Leadership at the Melbourne Business School, University of Melbourne, and is an ARC Future Fellow.
