SECTION 11 OTHER STUDENT FEES

This section lists general fees and charges that apply to students at Monash University campuses in Australia.

11.1 Annual Amenities Fee

From 2007 onwards there are no compulsory Amenities Fees for students enrolled at Monash University Australia (viz. courses with a location code of an Australian campus).  Amenities fees are applicable for students enrolled at Monash University Malaysia.

Refer  http://www.monash.edu.my/

Annual Amenities Fee prior to 2007

In 2006 eligible students will be invoiced an Amenities Fee in line with Voluntary Student Unionism and transitional year legislation.

The University Council sets the Annual Amenities Fee. Enrolled students are required to pay this fee in each teaching period.  The Annual Amenities Fee does not confer membership of any organization of students, but rather is levied to provide for legislatively sanctioned facilities, services or activities of direct benefit to the University or students at the University, such as employment services, sports and recreations facilities and services, student social and recreational services, and student assistance including welfare.

The Annual Amenities Fee is:

  • Calculated primarily on a per EFTSL basis

  • Defined as a full-time rate for students (1.00 EFTSL) in any one teaching period

  • Applied to all teaching periods in a year (i.e. Semester 1, 2, Winter, Summer, etc) see also “Teaching periods and census dates” at http://adm.monash.edu/enrolments/census.html

  • Set at a common flat rate per teaching period for Off-Campus students at all Victorian campuses (i.e. no difference between campuses)

The maximum fee for any student in any one teaching period will be the fulltime rate for the campus to which they are attached (i.e. a student with a study load in excess of 1.00 EFTSL in a teaching period will have the Amenities Fee capped at 1.00 EFTSL).

11.1.1 Off-site rate (applies from 2005 onwards)

Students enrolled at a Victorian campus where 75% or more of their course is delivered at a site further than one kilometre from the boundary of the campus at which they are enrolled will pay the Off-site Annual Amenities Fee which is equal to the Off-campus rate.

The Off-site rate will be available where the responsible faculty provides a list to the Fees Unit of students that qualify under the above policy (list to be forwarded prior to fee assessment of the relevant teaching period/semester).  The following locations are those that currently qualify:

  • Monash Medical Centre and associated hospital placements,

  • Monash University Law Chambers,

  • Work Experience in Industry.

Note:  Direct applications from students to the Fees Unit will not be accepted.

11.1.2 Exemptions (applies from 2005 onwards)

Annual Amenities Fees will not be charged to students who undertake Study Abroad, or study at the Prato Study Centre (even if some study is undertaken concurrently in Australia).

11.1.3 Staff Discount

Full-time and part-time staff members undertaking a course of study at Monash are entitled to an annual discount of $29.00 from the relevant Annual Amenities Fee.

11.1.4 Schedule of Annual Amenities Fees

For 2006 schedule of Annual Amenities Fee please refer to Annual Amenities Fee

11.1.5 Goods and Service Tax

The Australian Tax Office does not require Monash University to apply the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to the Amenities Fee.

11.1.6 Study at more than one campus

Students studying at more than one Australian Monash campus pay an Annual Amenities Fee based on their home campus and their mode of study. The total fee cannot exceed the full fee of the students’ home campus.

11.1.7 Exemptions from Annual Amenities Fee

The Annual Amenities Fee applies to all students, including those studying on a cross-institution basis with Monash as the host institution, except as described here:

  • Students undertaking cross-institution studies at Monash who have for the same period paid an amenities fee at their home institution will be exempt from Annual Amenities Fee payment to Monash upon provision of documentary evidence of such payment from their home institution.

  • Monash students who undertake study of units at another institution are required to pay the Monash Amenities Fee for any units in which they are enrolled at Monash.

  • Monash students undertaking cross-institution study, but not enrolled in units at Monash, are not required to pay Monash any Annual Amenities Fee.
