Working in partnership with students, teachers, industry and the broader community, the Gippsland Access and Participation (GAP) project aims to overcome education challenges in regional and rural areas.
Beyond the barrier of distance faced by those in regional and rural areas, these challenges also include declining numbers of students studying maths and science subjects at secondary school, and low levels of participation by Indigenous students in education.
The GAP project is funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations to help increase rural and Indigenous students’ participation in higher education.
Its focus includes:
Recognising the difficulties teachers in regional and rural areas often face, the GAP project supports isolated maths and science teachers in Gippsland with local networking and professional development activities.
By making learning fun, interesting and engaging, the GAP project is working to reverse the decline in the numbers of students studying maths and science at secondary school in Gippsland.
