Information for Environmental Officers

An environmental officer is appointed by the head of each academic/administrative unit to manage environmental issues in the unit.

The responsibilities of environmental officers include:

  • Supporting environmental initiatives
  • Collecting and reporting on data concerned with local environmental performance
  • Promoting environmental awareness
  • Disseminating environmental information
  • Highlighting environmental issues, risks and impacts and raising these at Zone OHS&E committee meetings
  • Liaising with unit heads and OHSE to address environmental issues
  • Investigating and reporting environmental incidents
  • Liaising with, and supporting, Green Office Representatives

Environmental officers have been broadly divided into two main groups depending on the interests of their area:

  • Office-based, or general, environmental officers, whose areas of responsibility are generally office-based environments
  • Technical environmental officers, whose areas include laboratories, workshops and studios and other technical areas in which chemical or biological materials are used

Training Recommended For Environmental Officers

Newly appointed environmental officers are required to attend environmental officer training in the first 6 months of their appointment, which will provide them with an overview of environmental management at Monash, and train them in their specific roles and responsibilities.
The program has two ½ day sessions for general environmental officers and a total of 1½ days for technical environmental officers.
