Asia's remarkable economic growth over the past five decades has made corporate law and governance in the region an issue of global importance. In this context, Monash University (with CLARS Deputy Director, Dr Steve Kourabas representing Monash Law) was one of nine prestigious universities, renowned for their expertise in corporate law and governance in Asia, that convened at the Asian Corporate Law Forum (ACLF) Planning Meeting on 9 June 2023 hosted by Singapore Management University's Yong Pung How School of Law. Their collective vision gave birth to the ACLF, a world-class organization dedicated to pioneering cutting-edge research and promoting the dissemination of knowledge in this pivotal field.

The primary objective of the ACLF is to establish itself as the preeminent annual forum, facilitating collaboration among leading scholars of Asian corporate law and governance. Through collaborative efforts, the ACLF will generate ground-breaking scholarship on Asian corporate law and governance that transcends borders and leaves a lasting global impact.

During the ACFL Planning Meeting, the founding institutions unanimously decided to host annual conferences from 2024 to 2033, with each conference held by one of the leading Founding Institutional Members. The Founding Institutional Members are Chulalongkorn University Faculty of Law, City University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law, Jindal Global Law School, Monash University Business and Law Schools, National Taiwan University College of Law, Peking University Law School, Seoul National University School of Law, Singapore Management University Yong Pung How School of Law, and the University of Tokyo Graduate Schools for Law and Politics. Together, they eagerly anticipate spearheading a transformative decade of corporate law and governance scholarship, with Asia at the heart of their endeavours.

Monash Law School is pleased to be a founding member of this exciting initiative. The launch of the ACLF marks a significant milestone in the global pursuit of excellence in corporate law and governance research – one of the main goals of Monash Law’s Centre for Commercial Law and Regulatory Studies (CLARS). By harnessing the collective expertise of leading institutions centred in Asia, the ACLF is poised to redefine the understanding and practice of corporate law and governance in the region and beyond.
