1. Outhwaite, Ida Rentoul, 1888-1960Image at left reproduced with permission from: Elves & Fairies by Annie R Rentoul and Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, Lothian Children's Books, an imprint of Hatchette Australia, 1916. Ida Rentoul Outhwaite is usually considered the best Australian children’s book illustrator. Elves & fairies was her first major work. This de luxe edition, a Melbourne production by Lothian, is a masterpiece of local publishing. Her fairy illustrations were immensely popular and she held her first art exhibition to coincide with the launch of the book. Also on display are some of her “Elves & fairies” postcards, from the 1930s. |
