How do I know what referencing style to use?

Referencing styles differ

Using the correct style of referencing is quite important in some faculties. For example, the BusEco Faculty provides its own Style Guide, the Student Q Manual Opens in a new window, which students are expected to use and, the School of Nursing and Midwifery Referencing Guidelines (PDF 134 KB) has comprehensive information on referencing using APA style.

Selecting the correct method

Your Unit Guide will be the first place to look for directions as to which referencing method to use. You should use that style requested, unless your lecturer directs otherwise.

If the method is unclear, the Library provides a clear guide to the referencing styles Opens in a new window recommended by Monash university faculty, school or departments. You can also make an online enquiry Opens in a new window or Ask Monash Opens in a new window.

You could also try your faculty website's student resources.

You could also refer to the QuickRef resources available on referencing in Language and Learning Online.
