How do I conduct research?

It depends on the task and task requirements!

Re-search efforts

One lecturer describes research as 're-searching' - meaning going over what others have already discovered in the relevant literature and resources in your field. In tertiary study, you are expected to use other people's work (their ideas and information) to support, develop and clarify your own.

In some undergraduate subjects, you will undertake actual research involving, for example, surveys, psychological testing, and so on. You would also be expected to undertake research in postgraduate research degrees but at a much more complex level involving ethics approval and so on. In most coursework assessment, however, research means collecting literature relevant to your topic, reading it, reflecting on it, and developing a line of argument you can support (or write about!) Of course, students undertaking higher degree research will also need to be familiar with this.

Library resources

Researching means you will need to become familiar with the resources of the Library. There are specific services Opens in a new window the Library offers for off-campus learners, such as assistance with searching for assignment resources Opens in a new window. For a range of research guides to helping you with this aspect for different disciplines, refer to the Library guides in our HandyRefs section.

Language and Learning Online has a great range of resources to provide guidance for how you work through the research process for assignment preparation.
