What is referencing?

University expectations

It is expected in tertiary education that you will use other people's work (their ideas and information) to support your own academic writing. Acknowledging the source of your support (where you got it from) is referred to as citing the source. It is also called referencing because such a reference allows the reader to go to the source themselves.

Using referencing styles accurately

Using the ideas of others requires the skills of referencing and should be done correctly for your discipline area. Work though the resources on why do we reference in Language and Learning Online which includes guidance on:

  • acknowledging sources
  • critiquing new ideas
  • what to reference
  • following the right conventions
  • referencing in the digital world
  • improving your technique
  • and a referencing checklist.
