Does 'independent' mean I need to do everything myself?

Success at university

The development of independent academic skills is vital to success at tertiary study, particularly in the off-campus learning mode. See What does the university mean by 'independent learning'? for guidance and resources for developing independent learning approaches.

Developing independent learners is one of the goals of the university but, remember, being independent doesn't mean you have to do it all alone. It does, however, mean that you need to work out what you need to do, and organise yourself to get it done.

Ensure that you connect with your learning community to help you make meaning from your learning. Engage with other students and your lecturers so that you take advantage of the support available.

Check the Contact people section to find out about the kind of support available from lecturers, the Off-Campus Learning Centre (OCLC Opens in a new window) and from Learning Support

By understanding the range of support available for students you can go straight to the source to resolve problems that may arise.
