Top tips for selecting a project

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, and don’t feel shy about contacting supervisors –they are hoping to hear from interested students. Remember that supervising Honours students also builds their academic track record and prestige; you contacting them is not burdensome.
And don’t feel awkward about ‘shopping around’ – it’s fine to make multiple enquiries about a range of different projects at the start. Nobody expects you to know immediately what you want to study.
The Alfred Research Alliance Honours Night each August is the single best way to kick start this process. Lots of supervisors come together with the sole purpose of speaking to prospective students, so make your visit worthwhile by making the rounds.
These are probably equally important. A great supervisor who is attentive and supportive will help you navigate any project, even through patches that feel difficult or relentless. When you are narrowing down your selection, ask your potential supervisor about their style of supervision, and how they like to interact with their Honours students. But also try to find a project that you find intriguing at the very least, if not outright inspiring.
Networking is an important activity as a clinician or researcher, so don’t be shy about this. If you’re leaning towards a specific project/supervisor, ask them if they can introduce you to a current student or recent graduate. When you speak to them, have at least five probing questions ready, ideally open-ended questions that demand considered and insightful answers. Things like:
- What were your daily experiences or routines while studying Honours?
- How would you describe your supervisor’s mentorship, and how have you responded to that?
- What have been the highest and lowest points of your Honours year?
- What are the most important things you’ve learned, or the most important opportunities that your Honours study has opened up to you?
- What do you know now about doing Honours that you wish you knew at the start?
