At the opposite end of the spectrum to the CAVE2, the Monash Immersive Visualisation Platform can also provide access to the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset, developed by Oculus VR.

Oculus Rift is a reboot of the VR headsets of the late 1980s and early 1990s, that takes advantage of the power of modern graphics cards, and combines the commodity nature of smart-phone sized, high resolution displays, and orientation sensors, to deliver a powerful immersive environment in a consumer product.

MIVP at present has one Oculus Rift headset, available on request for users to evaluate for their own visualisation purposes. Oculus Rift can be driven by all three major 3-d frameworks that we use in the CAVE2, viz. Omegalib, CalVR and Unity3d (with getReal3d from Mechdyne).

MIVP will continue to expand its offereings in head-mounted VR as the technology develops.
