Prime Minister John Howard last week awarded a $98,000 grant to the Australian Sustainable Industry Research Centre (ASIRC) based at the university's Gippsland campus during a visit to the region.
ASIRC was founded in 2002 by Monash University, Gippsland Water and the Cooperative Research Centre for Waste Management and Pollution Control (NSW) to provide Australian industry and the community with sustainable solutions for the management of resources, waste and the environment.

World-renowned Australian virologist Professor Frank Fenner spoke at Monash last week on the inevitability of the human population being subject to disease epidemics prompted by human contact with animals.
In giving the inaugural Rod Andrew Oration to a crowd of more than 100 at the Clayton campus, Professor Fenner said a growing global population and unprecedented international travel had put humankind at risk of uncontrollable outbreaks of potentially hundreds of new diseases.

National Instruments ASEAN has teamed up with Monash University Malaysia to establish a pilot remote-access electrical engineering laboratory that will enable students to conduct experiments over the internet.
The project, 'Design and development of a remote unmanned web-based laboratory for engineering education', involves transforming a traditional laboratory into an experimental facility that can be accessed online and is operational 24 hours a day, seven days a week. |
