Chancellor reappointed

Monash University has reappointed Mr Jerry Ellis as chancellor until 2007.

The Council of Monash University last week decided that Mr Ellis, the current chairman of the Australia--Japan Foundation, Future Directions International and the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission, should have his term as chancellor renewed for three years, from 2005 to 2007.

 
     

Books from Italy boost Italian studies

The Italian government has donated a significant collection of more than 700 books to Monash University, which will form the basis of an Italian studies research centre to be developed within the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics (SLCL).

It is only the third such donation made by Italy's Ministry for Cultural Heritage to universities in cities outside Europe with large Italian communities, the others being to universities in Alexandria, Egypt, and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

 
     

Remembering September 11

The chief medical examiner of the City of New York, Professor Charles Hirsch, told a Department of Forensic Medicine gathering last week that his staff would not rest until every victim of the September 11 attacks had been identified.

Professor Hirsch presented his views on his office's response to the September 11 tragedy to an audience of more than 250 people, including forensic pathologists, police, hospital, court and coronial staff, and emergency service workers.
