On 1 June, Monash chancellor Mr Jeremy Ellis conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws upon the Right Honourable Sir Zelman Cowen PC AK GCMG GCVO KStJ QC.
Vice-chancellor Professor Richard Larkins said Sir Zelman had had a warm association with Monash since the university's inception and had argued in favour of its creation.

A medical graduate from Monash has been awarded the Australian Fulbright (Alumni) Association's prestigious WG Walker Memorial Award.
Dr Ranjana Srivastava, who graduated with first class honours in 1997, received the award in April. The WG Walker Memorial Award is presented to the top-ranked postgraduate Fulbright recipient in Australia. The award is named in honour of Professor Bill Walker, the inaugural president of the Australian Fulbright Association.

Monash stem cell researcher Professor Alan Trounson addressed the United Nations Assembly in New York earlier this month on the topic of human cloning.
Professor Trounson called for a global ban on reproductive cloning -- where stem cells are used to create an exact copy of a human being – and pushed for an acceptance of therapeutic cloning, where embryonic and adult stem cells are used to treat many life-threatening illnesses. |
