Monash eyes US market

Monash is looking to offer distance education in the US after being alerted to potential new markets.

IDP US/Canada has identified a potential for Australian universities to provide distance-learning programs to US military veterans and active personnel.

Military veterans are entitled to 36 months full tuition reimbursement from the American government for fees if they enrol in approved university courses.

Monash is one of four Australian universities undergoing external accreditation of its distance programs to meet the requirements of US students.

Deputy vice-chancellor (academic) Professor Alan Lindsay said accreditation, through the Distance Education and Training Council in the US, was also expected to open up other opportunities.

"Military veterans represent a large group of off-campus students for Monash programs.

"Accreditation would also enable us to offer distance learning across the US, opening up a significant new market to us."

As part of the accreditation process a delegation from DETC will visit Monash in September.
