Campus plans unveiled29 September 2004 Urban plans to guide the development of three Monash campuses over the next 30 years have been unveiled by the deputy vice-chancellor (resources), Ms Alison Crook. Ms Crook said the plans for Clayton, Caulfield and Berwick campuses provided an over-arching framework for their physical development, while supporting academic plans for the campuses. "The urban plans will allow us to work steadily towards the improvement of the physical appearance of each campus with integrated accommodation and retail, sporting and entertainment facilities," she said. "They will ensure that individual buildings and refurbishments contribute to the creation of a desired campus character." Ms Crook said the plans were created in consultation with stakeholders across the university as well as local councils and CSIRO. "A consistent theme across all three plans is the importance of creating a sense of arrival at each campus," Ms Crook said. "We are aiming for an 'opening up' of our boundaries and the consolidation of a central hub, or meeting place, for students and staff, supported by appropriate pedestrian routes around each campus," she said. The urban plans make recommendations on the vision for the physical presentation of each campus and its character, including a planning rationale and identification of precincts, areas for future buildings and recommended building heights. The plans identify potential commercial, retail, residential and academic uses for each of the campuses and address town-planning, traffic and landscaping issues. Ms Crook said academic plans now in development would shape the academic vision and determine the rate and extent of growth in the faculties on each campus, within the context of overall university planning. She said urban plans for other campuses were also under way. The urban plans for the Clayton, Caulfield and Berwick campuses can be viewed at www.adm.monash.edu.au/facserv. |
