Making women's health a top priority16 February 2005 Women's health expert Professor Susan Davis has been appointed chair of women's health in the Department of Medicine at Monash and director of the NHMRC Centre of Clinical Research Excellence in the Study of Women's Health.
In her new position, Professor Davis will head the Women's Health Program, which she believes has an important role to play in ensuring the health and well-being of women. "I am delighted to have joined Monash University given its reputation as a leading research organisation and am very excited about the projects and collaborative opportunities that lie ahead," she said. "We want Australian women to experience the best possible quality of life by optimising their psychological, emotional, physical and social well-being. This is possible through research, evaluation of available information and professional and community education." Professor Davis leads a team of 16, as well as four PhD students, investigating areas including hormonal insufficiency, osteoarthritis, sexual function, dementia, cardiovascular disease risk, osteoporosis, breast cancer and management of menopausal symptoms. She has published more than 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts, written two books for women -- The Healthy Woman and Our Health, Our Lives --and practises as a consultant endocrinologist. For more information about the program and Professor Davis and her team, who are based at the Department of Medicine at The Alfred hospital, visit the Women's Health Program website.
