Monash academic to lead energy consumer committee

6 April 2005

Professor John Nieuwenhuysen is leading a state government committee that will investigate social welfare issues associated with the energy industry.

Professor Nieuwenhuysen is the director of Monash's Institute for the Study of Global Movements.

The inquiry into the financial hardship of energy consumers will investigate economic, political, diplomatic, welfare and social issues.

"Gas, water and electricity are essential services, but some find it difficult to manage their bill payments," Professor Nieuwenhuysen said.

"We will investigate why some people are unable to pay their energy bills and formulate ways they can be cushioned or given alternative methods of payment," he said.

Professor Nieuwenhuysen said the committee would soon advertise for public submissions.

The final report is likely to have implications for government policy.
