Dr Yeoh Seng Guan from the School of Arts and Science at Monash University Malaysia has been awarded an Asian Public Intellectual Senior Fellowship for 2005--2006.
The fellowships enable public intellectuals in Asia to pursue projects in other Asian countries.
Dr Yeoh (pictured), who coordinates the school's Communications Program, was one of three senior fellows chosen to represent Malaysia.
The fellowships are fully funded by the Nippon Foundation, an independent, non-profit organisation based in Japan.
Dr Yeoh will conduct his research in the Philippines in early 2006. His project is titled 'Being a street vendor: a critical ethnographic study of sidewalk capitalism in Baguio City, the Philippines'. While in the Philippines, Dr Yeoh will be affiliated with Ateneo de Manila University.
Previous Malaysian recipients of the fellowship have included economist Professor K.S. Jomo, independent film-maker Amir Muhammad, artist Nadia Bhamaj and Orang Asli (the Indigenous minority of Peninsular Malaysia) activist Colin Nicholas.
