The department, the biggest at Monash, is also Australia's largest provider of accounting, banking and finance tertiary teaching.

Mr John Webster, from the Caulfield campus, was a three-time winner when he was named top graduate in the Bachelor of Business (Accounting)/Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance), top student in the 'Advanced financial accounting theory and practice' unit and TD Securities' top student in the 'Future and options market' unit.

Mr Lucas Chick was declared the top first-year accounting student from the Peninsula campus, and Ms Jacqueline O'Hara received the Australian Securities and Investment Commission prize as the best 'Financial accounting and reporting' student in the Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Business and Commerce at the Gippsland campus.

The head of the Department of Accounting and Finance, Professor Jayne Godfrey, said the awards celebrated the efforts, ability and dedication of students.

"The awards night is an opportunity to reward those who have dared to dream and then had the commitment to achieve those dreams," Professor Godfrey said.

"Accounting and finance professionals are currently in extremely high demand. At Monash, we are recognising the skills of future graduates at an early stage to encourage their pursuit of excellence, both in their academic studies and in business."

Industry sponsors of the awards include CPA Australia, the Australasian Institute of Banking and Finance, National Australia Bank, Foremans, TD Securities, Thomson Learning, LEK Consulting, LexisNexis and McGraw-Hill.
