New scholarship package expands opportunities for students

More students pursuing higher education are guaranteed scholarships in the undergraduate program of their choice at Monash University in 2013, following the establishment of a comprehensive new scholarship package.
Monash University has expanded its undergraduate scholarship offerings with the development of The Sir John Monash Scholarship Package.
The new scholarships range in value from $30,000 to $70,000 with the top two including a cash component as well as an additional package of benefits including a healthy lifestyle allowance, leadership training and a mentor, and a global experience grant.
One of the most comprehensive and generous scholarship programs in Australia, it recognises the dedication and talent of Australia’s highest achieving students and provides support to those who otherwise might not have the opportunity to participate in a world-class education exclusive to Monash.
Monash University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Ed Byrne said University would offer more than 1200 new scholarships and bursaries in 2013 as part of the premium coursework scholarships program worth over $16 million. More than half of these will be offered to Indigenous students, students from regional and remote areas in Australia, and to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“The Sir John Monash Scholarship Package is the start of something new, essentially building on the University’s commitment to providing unparalleled academic opportunities to all our students,” Professor Byrne said.
“In the present climate, attention is increasingly drawn to the accessibility and affordability of higher education in Australia. The Scholarship Program at Monash in 2013 empowers students with greater support, flexibility and choice.
“The Scholarship Program generously rewards exceptional achievers, however equal recognition and support is given to the large proportion of talented individuals, who may not have otherwise been considered, with access to scholarships. Students who are offered one can use it for any course including Monash University’s flagship degrees.”
Professor Byrne said students will also have the option to effectively use their scholarship fund as a cash reward, rather than as direct course subsidisation.
“In 2013, scholars of Monash also have the option to defer CSP payments and use their well-earned scholarship to fund living or personal expenditure,” Professor Byrne said.
