Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Adam Shoemaker has accepted an extension on his term through to 2017 and will be joined in his portfolio by internationally recognised educator, researcher and anatomist, Professor Darrell Evans who has been appointed as the new Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching).

Monash Vice-Chancellor and President Ed Byrne announced the appointments today.

"I am delighted that Professor Shoemaker has accepted an extension to his appointment. He has overseen the quality enhancement of digital education and international learning activities at Monash since his arrival, and he has been highly influential in the development and implementation of flagship University projects such as Monash Directions 2025 and the Monash Passport," Professor Byrne said.

“The Monash-Oxfam and Monash-World Vision partnerships are key innovations which he has led on behalf of the University community.”

As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education), Professor Shoemaker oversees the quality, range and impact of the University's academic programs, the Academic Staffing portfolio, innovation in digital education and international learning, Indigenous student and staff access, programs and support, and the Monash University libraries.

He also serves on the board of Open Universities Australia (OUA) and is Chair of the state government body which oversees the VCE, NAPLAN and the development of the National Curriculum: The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA).

Professor Shoemaker came to Monash to undertake the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) in 2007.

Before joining Monash, Professor Shoemaker was Dean of the College of Arts and Social Sciences at the Australian National University (ANU). He was also the Foundation Director of the ANU Research School of Humanities. Professor Shoemaker is one of Australia’s leading scholars in the area of Indigenous Literature and Cultural Studies and is widely published in those areas.

He has been a visiting professor at the University of Antwerp and the University of Toulouse II.

Professor Darrell Evans will join the University in January 2013 as new the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching).

Professor Evans’ responsibilities will include aspects of the management of curriculum reform, as well as renewal and redesign of administrative processes to ensure that students and staff experience the best in educational innovation; adapting and connecting enterprise-level technologies to provide staff and students with accessible and engaging experiences in the future of learning; highlighting and recognising student skill development in curriculum and co-curriculum programs, and ensuring continued educational excellence.

Monash University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Ed Byrne said the appointment follows a worldwide search to find the best candidate for the position.

“Professor Evans has extensive experience, and during his time at Cardiff University and Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) in the UK, he implemented a number of programs incorporating international aspects into local learning,” Professor Byrne said.

Professor Evans trained as an anatomist and developmental biologist, gaining his PhD at Aberdeen University, Scotland, before working as a researcher at Cornell University in the United States and then as a lecturer and senior lecturer at Cardiff University and Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) respectively in the UK. Whilst at BSMS, Professor Evans gained a Professorship in Developmental Tissue Biology and in 2008 became Head of Anatomy, Associate Dean and more recently the Acting Head of the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine.

Professor Evans holds fellowships with the Society of Biology, the Royal Microscopical Society and the Higher Education Academy in the UK.

Professor Evans said he was excited to be joining Monash University.

"Monash already has an enviable reputation for forward-thinking approaches to learning and teaching and I very much look forward to working with colleagues to provide the most effective and appropriate learning experience for all students at Monash," Professor Evans said.

Professor Sue Willis will continue to serve in the role as interim Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching) through to the end of the year.
