Announcing the Maxwell King PhD Scholarship

A new PhD scholarship has been created in honour of Emeritus Sir John Monash Distinguished Professor Maxwell King
A valuable scholarship has been created to honour Professor Maxwell King, who made an outstanding contribution to graduate research at Monash University, including eight years as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Research Training).
The Maxwell King PhD Scholarship, valued at A$30,343 per annum, will be awarded to the best applicant wishing to undertake a PhD degree in any field of study at the University and will be made on the basis of outstanding academic merit.
After 35 years at Monash University, Professor Max King retired in December 2012 and was honoured with the title Emeritus Sir John Monash Distinguished Professor. He was a driving force behind significant research training innovations at Monash, including the establishment of the Monash University Institute of Graduate Research and the Monash PhD.
Provost and Senior Vice-President Professor Edwina Cornish said the scholarship was recognition of Professor King’s dedication during his time at Monash.
“The creation of a PhD scholarship is one way in which we can honour Professor King’s years of service and ongoing commitment to the University," Professor Cornish said.
"I encourage PhD applicants who are about to embark on their degree to consider applying for the numerous opportunities for support that we have on offer and have the chance to be chosen for the Maxwell King Scholarship."
One Maxwell King PhD Scholarship will be offered annually and only full-time PhD candidates, domestic or international, are eligible to hold this award. A research allowance of up to A$1500 per annum may also be payable.
The recipient will be chosen from the end-of-year scholarship round, which closes 31 October each year, and the recipient will be notified in mid-December.
Scholarship recipients are required to submit a report on the progress of their research to the Monash University Institute of Graduate Research (MIGR) by 31 October in each year of their candidature. A brief statement by the supervisor on the progress of the research project must also accompany the report.
