Architectural leader honoured

Monash University Dean of Art, Design & Architecture, Professor Shane Murray has achieved national recognition for research excellence and educational leadership.

Professor Murray, who is also Foundation Professor of Architecture at Monash, was last week awarded the Neville Quarry Architectural Education Medal, by the Australian Institute of Architects.

The prestigious national award was presented to Professor Murray in recognition of his "enduring contributions to education" and his "ability to link design-based research and professional engagement with architectural education".

During a career spanning 30 years, Professor Murray has nurtured the ambitions of students and colleagues, through the leadership of architectural programs at RMIT University and Monash University.

He has also built the capacity of architecture education through innovative program development and astute strategic linkages with industry and government.

His most recent achievement is establishing the highly regarded architecture program at Monash University and the Monash Architecture Studio research bureau.

Professor Murray said he was deeply honoured to receive the award.

"It has been my great joy over the last 30 years to engage across education and practice," Professor Murray said.

"I’m enthused by educating future architects and by encouraging architecture schools to utilise their extraordinary potential to reach into and benefit the communities they serve.”
