Australia’s Academician

Professor Greg Bamber
Professor Greg Bamber of the Faculty of Business and Economics has received the award of Academician from the Academy of Social Sciences. Only six other Australians have ever received this honour. He is the only Academician in Victoria.
Professor Bamber is Discipline Group Leader: Human Resources and Employment Relations, Department of Management. He was formerly Director of Research there.
Along with other colleagues, he currently holds three joint ARC grants. These are for research on HRM outsourcing/shared services, equity/efficiency in dispute prevention and settlement, and workplace change in healthcare.
He has recently published two books, again with other colleagues, that have attracted much international attention: Up in the Air: How Airlines Can Improve Performance by Engaging their Employees, Cornell University Press; and International and Comparative Employment Relations: Globalisation and Change, Allen & Unwin. Peking University Press will soon publish a Chinese adaptation of this book, which has already been translated into other languages and is widely cited around the world.
The Academy's mission is to promote social sciences, especially in the United Kingdom, for the public benefit. The Academy sponsors schemes that promote social science and enhance its value to society.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Ed Byrne said the award was an outstanding achievement.
“Professor Bamber’s inclusion in this elite group of academics is testament to his excellence in the field of research and academia. Professor Bamber also has a wonderful ability to communicate his knowledge to the wider community via both mainstream and specialist media. It is this communication skill that will assist in his promotion of his work and that of the wider Monash research community throughout the UK,” Professor Byrne said.
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Edwina Cornish said the award was acknowledgement of Professor Bamber’s research career success.
“The award is granted based on peer group review and confirms Professor Bamber’s significant achievements throughout his career and his contribution to social science. On behalf of the Monash research community, I commend Professor Bamber on this career milestone,” Professor Cornish said.
Professor Bamber said he was lucky to have excellent research colleagues, at Monash and elsewhere.
"To paraphrase Isaac Newton, if I have had any achievements, it is only by standing upon the shoulders of giants, including teachers, mentors, colleagues and family, so any credit should be shared with them!," Professor Bamber.
