International students from Monash University received a once in a lifetime opportunity to work as translators for professional NBA players and coaches at the NBA Asia Pacific Team Camp in Dandenong.
Hosted at the Dandenong Basketball Stadium, the camp was led by former NBA Chicago Bulls championship players Horace Grant, Ron Harper and Australia’s Luc Longley, all three of whom were teammates of the legendary Michael Jordan.
The camp was conducted by the NBA for leading young players from Australia, New Zealand, Korea and China. Monash Sport provided students as Mandarin translators for the Chinese team. In this role, the students communicated relevant information regarding administrative matters and future events schedules between the young players and the NBA coaches.
For final year Bachelor of Commerce student Kevin Jainxin Liu and Master of Marketing and International Business student Cara Ling Shu, the camp has provided them with a valuable volunteer experience that they won’t soon forget.
“To be able to participate in this camp was indescribable. To have the chance to meet NBA legends, as well as the young professional players was a remarkable opportunity and I couldn’t have done it without Monash University supporting me,” said Jainxin.
“The camp was a great opportunity from Monash University to work with wonderful people. I have not only improved my knowledge of basketball, but I have also learnt important lessons in patience, perseverance and passion,” said Ling.
The Department of Physiotherapy also participated, with three Bachelor of Physiotherapy students working as sports trainers over the five-day camp. All three students are in the final year of their degree and have concurrent sports training qualifications, allowing them to contribute valuably to the camp.
