Young footballers are put through their paces as part of an AFL program at Monash

In a joint initiative with Monash University, the AFL has held a training camp to educate young men on becoming elite athletes.

Forty boys aged between 14 and 16 took part in the camp where they learnt about nutrition, how to join the ranks of elite athletes as well as the pitfalls of drugs and alcohol.

The fitness testing and talent identification component was held at Monash University.

The boys were hand picked for their AFL skills and represented a variety of backgrounds.

Past and present AFL players were also on hand to hold skill sessions with the boys including Essedon’s Michael Hurley and Collingwood’s Peter Daicos.

Daicos’ son Josh, 14, participated in the camp as did the younger brother of North Melbourne rising star Majak Dawe.

Tigers legend Tom Hafey ran a session and took the boys on a tour of the MCG.

The camp finished with the boys vying for bragging rights in a friendly game against each other.
