Behind the European debt crisis

The European Union's top representative in Australia will join leading political researchers to discuss the region's sovereign debt crisis at a unique panel discussion this week.
Presented by the Monash European and EU Centre (MEEUC), the public discussion, ‘Can the Eurozone survive its crisis?’ will examine the factors behind Europe's current crisis, the structural weaknesses of the European Monetary Union, and the economic and political problems associated with the austerity measures that have been pursued.
Research Professor in Economics at the University of Newcastle, Professor Bill Mitchell, will present the main seminar, to be followed by comments from Dr Stefan Auer from La Trobe University.
The event will be chaired by His Excellency Mr David Daly, Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Australia and New Zealand.
Deputy Director of the MEEUC, Dr Natalie Doyle, said the event would showcase the Centre's approach to teaching and research in general.
“The seminar has been organised to include panellists with a variety of backgrounds and approaches to issues in the EU,” Dr Doyle said.
“Professor Mitchell and Dr Auer are both Associate Members of the MEEUC, but based at other universities.
“It is also intended to bring in cross-disciplinary points of view as Dr Auer is a senior lecturer in history and politics at La Trobe while Professor Mitchell is an economist and Director of the Centre of Full Employment and Equity (CofFEE) at the University of Newcastle.
“The debate is chaired by Mr David Daly, highlighting the centre’s active engagement with the world of European policy-making.
“There will also be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions of the panellists, so we hope to see plenty of interest and lively discussion.”
‘Can the Eurozone survive its crisis?’ will be held from 6-7.30pm on Tuesday 1 May at the Monash Conference Centre, Level 7, 30 Collins St, Melbourne.
