Brilliant options await the ‘Classes of 2012’

It is important for future students to keep in mind that in selecting their preferences, students remember that this is just one step and that there is plenty of time to work out what is best for them in learning and life in general.
Over 50,000 students will be receiving their VCE results on Monday and subsequently, their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).
For many, those results will mean the students looking to continue their education at a tertiary level will have a chance to reassess their preferences.
Monash University’s Associate Professor Lucas Walsh from the Faculty of Education said the release of the VCE results will be a time of mixed emotions - excitement, relief, anxiety and stress – for the ‘Class of 2012’.
“After a big year, many VCE students will be anxious to lock in the next step of their lives,” Associate Professor Walsh said.
“Some may need to revisit their preferences because their ATAR scores are not what they expected. The good news is that there are still plenty of options.
“Many universities offer a variety of entry points to university study. Monash University, for example, offers the Diploma of Tertiary Studies (DoTS), which is an alternative entry pathway that is equivalent to the first year of a university undergraduate (Bachelor) degree.”
Associate Professor Walsh said for those whose scores are more than what they expected, it is an opportunity to reflect on what they are passionate about, because university offers such a wide range of wonderful opportunities to learn, meet other people and understand better how our world works.
It is also important for students selecting their preferences to remember that this is just one step and that there is plenty of time to work out what is best for them in learning and life in general.
“University is an exciting time to learn, explore and discover one's passions, so the next step is only one of many that will unfold during the course of study,” Associate Professor Walsh said.
“Students should explore, understand and discuss these options with their parents, carers and the people that are important to them. There is plenty of help available to them if they have any questions."
Monash University’s Change of Preference Expo is all about future students reconsidering course options before settling on their final list of preferences. It allows students to discuss course options, scholarships, entry requirements, fees and costs, and alternative entry pathways with the experts from all the University’s faculties.
The Monash Change of Preference Expo will be held on Wednesday 19 December between 3 – 7pm in Building H at the University’s Caulfield campus (Melways ref: Map 68 F1).
Faculty Information sessions will be held between 3 – 6.30pm.
