A Monash University PhD student has been afforded a rare honour, selected to attend the prestigious Graduate Seminar on China (GSOC) early next year.

Philip Wing Keung Chan from the Faculty of Education is one of 23 PhD students from around the world invited to attend the annual seminar to be held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Hosted by the Universities Service Centre for China Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and CUHK-Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation Asia-Pacific Centre for Chinese Studies, the GSOC promotes research on contemporary Chinese issues while encouraging exchange among Chinese and young overseas scholars in the field.

The seminar will cover areas such as education, governance, ethnic minorities, international relations, history, rural politics, nation and arts, economy and finance, social transformation, health care and social resistance.

“I am very excited to be given this fantastic opportunity to showcase my research in front of such an esteemed audience,” Mr Chan said.

“As well as presenting my research, it will be reviewed by my peers. It is a unique opportunity to have an academic comment on my paper and then have an open discussion on my methodology and findings.”

Mr Chan will present his paper, Network Governance in Chinese Public Education Reform: Railway Enterprise-run Schools in Harbin and Shenzhen, which reveals network governance to be an effective and legitimate way of problem-solving that assists policy implementation and education reform in China.

“There are enormous changes happening in China which has opened up many research opportunities. I will be very interested to hear about other Chinese-related research being undertaken around the world,” Mr Chan said.

“I am looking forward to networking with my fellow presenters and discussing possible collaborative research projects with them.”

Representatives from the Australian National University, University of Washington, University of California San Diego, University of California Berkeley, University of Oxford, University of Warwick, Harvard University, Stanford University, University of Columbia, Freie University Berlin, Yonsei University South Korea and Stockholm University Sweden have also been invited to present their research.
