O-Week 2012 drew to a close with Discovery Day, Monash Sport’s inaugural event to introduce new students, staff and the wider community to the opportunities available to them beyond the classroom.

The two-day event began on Saturday at Monash University’s Caulfield campus where attendees experienced the new fitness centre free of charge and took part in various group fitness classes, including demonstrations using the new TRX equipment.

The day wrapped up with a sausage sizzle, with all proceeds going towards the Good Friday appeal.

The activities continued on Sunday at Monash University’s Clayton campus. Support services, clubs and societies from around Monash showcased themselves alongside entertainment including, a petting zoo and performances from the Monash Academy of Performing Arts, and the Martial Arts and Cheerleading clubs.

Event organiser and sports program leader, Michael Jones, said Discovery Day was a great way to start the university year.

“We have recently undertaken some capital projects within the sports centre, including a remodelled floor plan in the fitness area, retiling of the Doug Ellis Swimming Pool and a new informal synthetic sports area,” Mr Jones said.

“By hosting Discovery Day we encouraged members of the Monash community to come and explore these improved areas and all the other great sporting facilities they have available to them.”

The idea for Discovery Day began as a way to encourage new students to find out about different clubs and services on campus.

“Discovery Day provided clubs with an opportunity to showcase themselves to new students. Instead of just speaking to a person behind a table, students are able to watch the club in action or have a go themselves,” Mr Jones said.

“A twilight outdoor cinema screening of ‘Despicable Me’ on the big screen located at the Freason oval (main oval) marked the end to the great weekend. We can’t wait to do it again next year.”
