Double act in community spirit

Jose and Kevin Tangga
In recognition of their dedication to community spirit and helping others, two brothers have each been awarded Monash University's Community Leader Scholarship.
Jose 'Paulo' Tangga and his younger brother Mark 'Kevin' were presented with the scholarships at Monash University's annual scholarships ceremony held in Melbourne yesterday.
Paulo who is currently studying a Bachelor of Science Advanced with Honours, has worked as a mentor for the last year in the Access Monash Mentoring program and volunteers for non-profit organisations Melbourne Legacy and St Vincent De Paul Society where he helps provide meals for the disadvantaged.
“I enjoy volunteering and each experience is rewarding and worthwhile,” Paulo said.
“Having lived in a third world country such as the Philippines for most of my life, I have learned to value education very highly. I have seen the advantages and benefits that a good education can give, and I have learned to appreciate every opportunity presented to me.”
Kevin, who began volunteering as a youth ambassador with the City of Casey in Melbourne's east, will join his older brother in the Access Monash Mentoring program next year.
“I look forward to taking up my scholarship and studying at Monash,” Kevin said.
“It will allow me to be an Access Monash Ambassador, which will not only better myself, but will benefit students and most of all the wider community.
“I love to teach and engage with others so I wish to provide driven school students an effective yet enjoyable learning environment.”
The Monash Community Leaders Scholarship recognises students who demonstrate commitment to contributing positively to the community and making a difference to the lives of others.
The scholarship is awarded to Year 12 graduates with an ATAR over 90 and current students.
