Monash University has remained in contact with the family of Marisa ‘Maria’ Strydom to offer assistance during this tragic time. Maria's family has requested Monash assist them in coordinating an update to the media in relation to efforts to retrieve her from Mt Everest.
A team has gone up and reached Maria, moving her further down the mountain. Due to adverse weather conditions, the team has ceased further efforts until conditions are safe enough to resume. Weather forecasts are looking favourable at this stage for tomorrow.
It is expected that, if all goes to plan, Maria will reach camp 2 tomorrow from where a helicopter evacuation is possible to base camp. From there she will be taken to Kathmandu where further arrangements will then be made to bring her back to Australia.
The family has requested that requests for information regarding the retrieval mission be coordinated through the Monash media and communications team at this time.
Monash media may be contacted at media@monash.edu or by telephone on 03 9903 4840.
