Excellence recognised after tumultuous year

There is little doubt the past year has been one of the most exciting, tragic and dynamic years the community has witnessed in recent times.
The transition of one Prime Minister to another, followed by a Federal election that hung in the balance for weeks, a tied AFL Grand Final, the Chilean mine rescue triumph and the devastating mining disaster in New Zealand, the Icelandic Volcano eruption and the engagement of Prince William all made headlines through 2010.
With so many inspiring, devastating and amazing stories filling the pages of newspapers and the air time of television news services, journalists have been spoiled for choice for subject matter.
To recognise and reward the best of the best in news coverage over the past year, the Melbourne Press Club will again host the Quill Awards.
Since 1995, the Quill Award have sought to highlight achievement and commitment to integrity and honesty in journalism across 25 categories and special awards. Each category winner is then eligible to win the Gold Quill Award, which is sponsored by Monash University - the major sponsor of the Melbourne Press Club.
This year, the event will be MC'd by Peter Mitchell from Seven news while noted author and journalist, John Silvester from the Age newspaper will provide the keynote address.
In recognising ongoing commitment to journalism, a lifetime achievement award is also presented on the evening, which in the past has been bestowed on high-profile journalists such as Laurie Oakes and Michele Grattan.
The club also selects a Young Journalist of the Year, who is provided with travel costs to attend one of the world's best journalism conferences, the annual Investigative Reporters and Editors conference in the United States.
The event also presents an excellent opportunity for Monash University journalism students to have the opportunity to network with media industry leaders and see the best of the best examples print, television and radio journalism.
The Quill Awards will be held at Crown on Friday, 1 April 2011. For further information about the event visit http://www.pressclubonline.com/Events
