Games of our own

A team of winners at the 2011 Monash Games
The mid-semester break provides welcome relief for students wanting to take a well-deserved break from university life, but for TeamMONASH™ there's no time for respite.
Now in its sixth year, the annual Monash Games is two days of intense sporting competition between members of the Monash Sport family at the University's Clayton campus.
The Monash Games will feature students and staff from all Victorian campuses. The 2011 games even attracted a team from Monash University’s Sunway campus.
Leora Cossens, who just completed the last semester of her six-year Bachelor of Arts (Languages) / Bachelor of Business degree at the Clayton campus, is a regular participant in the Monash Games.
“I've always really enjoyed the Monash Games. For students, it's super convenient because it's on campus, and it's always a hoot playing against other students and staff – and even more thrilling when you beat them,” Leora said.
“Overall, the Monash Games is a fantastic sports tournament which is very social and inclusive of all fitness and skill levels. It's been one of the highlights of my university experience and I'd encourage all students to get a team together for the games.”
The 2012 games will host a range of competitions, including basketball, five-a-side indoor soccer, mixed and women’s netball and volleyball. The day of finals will see a range of competitions come to a conclusion and will feature a host of trial sports, including table tennis, squash and dodge ball.
In 2012, those interested in participating can sign up via an all new online team registration system. Transport will be provided to Clayton for all students from other campuses.
Director of Monash Sport, Martin Doulton, said the 2012 games will continue the tradition of a staff challenge to be run as part of the event.
“This challenge will be condensed into a lunch time event – for ultimate workplace bragging rights at Monash,” Mr Doulton said.
“For staff and students who would still like to be involved in the TeamMONASH™ experience and who feel that taking to the court isn’t really their speed, volunteering opportunities are available on the day.”
The Monash Games will be held at from 19-20 July at the Clayton campus. Registration is $80 per team and includes entry into your chosen sporting competition and lunch for both days.
