Honorary degrees go to banker, researcher and footballer

At ceremonies this week Monash University has recognised the outstanding achievements of three leaders of business, medicine and sport.
Business leader Mr Harrison Young (HonLLD 1966,) and diabetes research pioneer Professor Paul Zimmet AO were presented with their honorary degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa by Chancellor Dr Alan Finkel AM at a ceremony held last night in Melbourne.
While in a separate event held earlier in the week, AFL great and businessman Mr Peter Hudson AM was presented with an Honorary Fellowship by Deputy Chancellor Mr Ian Pyman.
Mr Young has an international career in banking, finance, the armed forces and infrastructure and is Chairman of NBN Co Limited and of Better Place (Australia) Pty LTD. In addition, he is director of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and serves on the Court of Directors of the Bank of England.
Monash University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Ed Byrne expressed his delight at welcoming Mr Young into the Monash Community.
“Harrison Young is leading some of Australia’s most innovative nation-building projects and to be able to acknowledge his work and draw upon his experience and stewardship is a unique opportunity,” Professor Byrne said.
“As Monash prepares for the future it is vital that we draw upon the knowledge and ideas of leaders from right across the public and private sectors.”
Professor Zimmet has developed an outstanding reputation for his research into diabetes, obesity and related disorders. An internationally acclaimed clinical scientists and epidemiologist Professor Zimmet has devoted his life to the research, education and care of persons with diabetes.
“Paul has played a central role in the development of public awareness around diabetes, which is now recognised as one of the biggest health concerns facing the Australian population,” Professor Byrne said.
“He has led the way in research and informed public policy to tackle diabetes and we’re delighted to be able to acknowledge his dedication and scholarship in this way.”
Mr Hudson was made an Honorary Fellow in recognition of his substantial contribution to the Monash community through sport, administration, business, health promotion and research.
The University Council can approve an Honorary Degree for any person, regardless of whether they are a graduate of the University, in recognition of their distinguished contribution to a branch of learning, the arts, or service to the public.
