Inspiration for learning
Michael Bryden and Professor Adam Shoemaker
A Charlie Perkins Trust Travelling Fellowship has provided promising Monash student Michael Bryden with the opportunity to visit prestigious Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
Monash University and the Charlie Perkins Trust share a commitment to improving the education of Indigenous Australians. While they are improving, levels of attainment among Indigenous Australians continue to remain below those of non-Indigenous Australians.
Established in 2002, in memory of the late Dr Charlie Perkins AO, the Trust aims to improve the welfare of Indigenous children through health initiatives, training and education opportunities such as the fellowship.
Michael, who recently completed a Bachelor of Arts (Criminology and Politics) and has applied to continue with honours, was selected from more than 60 applicants across Australia.
The exchange provided Michael with the opportunity to visit the criminology departments of both Cambridge and Oxford, as well as the chance to meet with lecturers and professionals at various functions.
“The Institute of Criminology at Cambridge was particularly impressive, especially the criminology library which is one of the top three in the world. To be able to meet with people from the department and take in the amazing facilities and surrounds was a wonderful opportunity,” Michael said.
Prior to completing the Fellowship Michael was considering a career in the police force, however, his experience overseas has since inspired him to pursue further postgraduate study.
“I had no idea that the trip would have such a profound impact on my education and, potentially, the trajectory of my life. After completing my honours I would now like to undertake postgraduate study at Oxford, Cambridge or perhaps a university in the United States,” Michael said.
Michael is particularly grateful for the support provided by Monash University and the Charlie Perkins Trust.
“Without the support of the Trust I would never have been able to experience this opportunity; the team worked tirelessly to ensure we got the most out of the fellowship. I am also grateful to Monash for providing me with the tools to succeed in academia,” Michael said.
“My advice to future students is to make the most of your university experience. This includes not only striving to get the best results you can but also taking advantage of the generous opportunities available.”
