Monash University Museum of Art is delighted to present Liquid Archive, which continues MUMA’s ongoing series of thematic survey exhibitions.
Curated by Geraldine Barlow, MUMA’s Senior Curator, Liquid Archive features the work of eight international artists/artist collectives and nine artists from Australia, and brings together invited artist projects with key works from the Monash University Collection.
Liquid Archive explores the various ways in which artists are currently working with archives and archival strategies to explore the mechanisms through which we capture and recall experience, and the passage of time itself.
“The idea of the archive conjures images of authoritative yet dusty collections of boxes, files and documents, often understood as immutable repositories of collective memory," Geraldine Barlow said.
“And yet today, as the globe pulses with data and the incessant hum of networked communication systems, collective memory is increasingly located within the digital realm; a domain which is subject to constant and accelerating change.”
Liquid Archive traces connections between traditional notions of the archive, emerging technologies, and the ways in which memory and personal experience are incorporated into larger histories.
A program of associated public events will coincide with Liquid Archive, including Archive States; a one day symposium to be held at Monash University on Saturday 28 July, developed by the Faculty of Art Design & Architecture in partnership with MUMA.
Liquid Archive will be current at MUMA from 19 July – 22 September, with the official opening celebration on Saturday 21 July, 3-5pm. For more information visit the MUMA website.
