Monash University named best urban design for second year running
Logan Hall has been named Victoria’s best multi-dwelling residential architecture, with Holman Hall and Campbell Hall also recognised in the same category. The Clayton Urban Residential Community was named the best Victorian urban design architecture for 2016.
Trisha Prpich, Director of Monash Residential Services, said the University is immensely proud to have its new Clayton residencies recognised for their design excellence.
“The halls of residence were designed to create vibrant, urban and inclusive community spaces and a rich independent living experience for our residents.
“We want our residents to feel deeply connected to their physical space and identify it as their home. The architectural design of the buildings has achieved this by complementing and enhancing the community atmosphere and aesthetic of the campus,” said Ms Prpich.
Designed by architects McBride Charles Ryan, the new Logan Hall student residency was recognised by the judges for its excellence in architectural skill and merit of design. The building focuses on sustainability, accessibility and fostering a strong sense of community for its residents, and has achieved a Five Star Green Building Council of Australia rating for excellence in environmentally friendly design.
Logan Hall is one of four new residencies on Monash University’s Clayton campus that have increased student accommodation by 1000 rooms. The nearby Holman and Campbell halls, designed by Hayball and Richard Middleton Architects, were also recognised for their architectural significance and transformative nature.
These halls form part of the greater Clayton Urban Residential Community, which was awarded best urban design architecture. This award celebrates achievements in design which enhance the quality of the built environment and benefit the broader community.
“This is the second year running that Monash has secured the Institute of Architects' urban design award – a true indication that the University’s Clayton campus is at the forefront of campus community design,” Ms Prpich said.
In 2015 Monash Clayton’s North West Precinct, designed by Jackson Clements Burrows Architects in collaboration with MGS Architects as the master planner, received the award for the building rejuvenation and integrated landscaping of the Clayton science and research precinct. This was one of six state and one national awards Monash received at the 2015 Institute of Architects awards.
The Clayton Urban Residential Community forms part of the greater Clayton Campus Masterplan, designed by MGS Architects to provide a blueprint for campus development over the next 20 years.
