In single-seat racing cars they have designed and built themselves, students from Monash University and the University of Warwick will be revving their engines as they compete to be first past the chequered flag at Silverstone.
Monash Motorsport and Warwick Racing will race against other university teams from around the world in the UK Formula Student competition during a three-day event starting 9 July 2014 at Silverstone racetrack, home of the British Grand Prix.
The Formula Student events, which take place all over the world, provide an opportunity for students to put their engineering, IT and business skills to the test in the world of motorsport.
Before the event, Monash Motorsport will share expertise with their Warwick colleagues and visit UK motor industry leaders to broaden their automotive design and engineering knowledge.
Monash Motorsport Team Leader, Edward Hamer, said the Formula Student competition challenged students to design, construct, promote and race a single-seat racing car.
“This unique, real-world experience develops skills that the engineering industry requires, while also building our ability to work collaboratively and in an international environment,” Edward said.
Warwick Racing Project Manager, Mr Oliver Adams, said the competition was a fantastic opportunity for students to get involved in motorsport and advanced engineering.
“The chance to work with and race against Monash Motorsport also gives us a great international perspective. We’ve had a lot of fun with them here on campus and we hope to keep up the long-term collaboration,” Mr Adams said.
The Monash team is currently ranked second in the world, out of more than 500 universities. Warwick Racing improved its world ranking by 37 places after visiting Monash in December 2013 and participating in the Australian Formula Student event.
Monash Motorsport’s visit to the UK is supported by the Monash Warwick Alliance, which aims to produce internationally skilled graduates who are ready to face the challenges and excel in a global workplace.
