National conference on injury prevention

Monash University’s Injury Research Institute (MIRI) will be well represented at the upcoming National Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion, with many staff speaking on a variety of topics.
The Queensland conference, now in its 10th year, is the premier injury prevention event for Australia and the Asia Pacific, featuring representatives from all facets of injury prevention including research, teaching, practice and policy.
Ten staff members representing Monash University will be involved in the three day event, speaking on a broad range of topics including dog bite injury, pedestrian fatalities, falls, sports injury and work related injury. Dr Lesley Day, Deputy Director of MIRI will be speaking on reducing falls among older people.
MIRI is unique in its dedication to the prevention, management, and rehabilitation of injury across the full range of age groups of people concerned.
The institute will also have a booth at the conference to highlight their presence in the injury prevention and safety promotion scene. Through interactions with conference delegates, MIRI can showcase how the specialist, multi-disciplinary research teams within the Institute work to prevent injuries, save lives and build futures.
The conference, which is organised by The Australian Injury Prevention Network (AIPN) and the Queensland University of Technology’s Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety Queensland (CARRS-Q) will also feature a keynote address from Professor Niki Ellis.
As the CEO of the Institute of Safety, Compensation and Recovery Research at Monash University, Professor Ellis will open the conference on its final day, discussing the future directions for work-related injury prevention and safety promotion.
Other areas of Monash University which will be represented include Forensic Medicine, Civil Engineering, Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, and Gippsland Regional Clinical School.
