New agreement to enhance transport safety

Professor Mark Stevenson
Two Australian leaders of road safety research will formally join forces with the aim of reducing road accidents.
The Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) will this week sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the University of Adelaide-based Centre for Automotive Safety (CASR), bolstering an already strong relationship.
Professor Mark Stevenson, Director of MUARC said the MOU would pave the way for greater collaboration between the two centres, who had worked together on an informal basis until now.
“This will strengthen our research activities with a focus, in the first instance, around in-depth crash investigations. This research will lead to a greater level of understanding around the safety of our vehicles and how to improve them,” Professor Stevenson said.
As part of the arrangement, MUARC and CASR will hold a series of joint research seminars in Melbourne and Adelaide.
The first seminar, which takes place on Thursday, 23 February in Melbourne, will present new developments in road safety data systems. It will also look at ways of improving road infrastructure using in-depth crash investigations, the research from which could guide vehicle design and other strategies to reduce serious and fatal road injuries.
This seminar will be followed by the signing of the MOU by Professor Stevenson and Professor Mary Lydon, Director of CASR.
The collaboration will allow for a national roll-out of in-depth crash investigation research and the first joint course on leadership and management in transport safety.
“By working together and taking a truly national approach to road safety, MUARC and CASR will support the development of transport safety in Australia and beyond,” Professor Stevenson said.
The inaugural MUARC-CASR Research Seminar will be held on Thursday, 23 February, 2.30 - 4pm, at the Monash Conference Centre, 30 Collins St, Melbourne.
