New Faculty of Law Dean appointed

Legal experts will discuss forced adoption in Australia.
Renowned researcher and legal consultant Professor Bryan Horrigan has been appointed as the new Dean of the Faculty of Law.
Professor Horrigan will take up the role in January 2013, succeeding Professor Arie Freiberg who upon his retirement, has been appointed an Emeritus Professor of Monash University, and will continue to contribute to the academic life of the Faculty and University.
Professor Horrigan currently holds the Louis Waller Chair of Law within the Faculty and is also the Associate Dean (Research). Professor Horrigan is a long-standing law firm consultant in business and governmental areas of law and practice, with broad academic expertise and professional experience in public and corporate law and governance.
Provost and Senior Vice-President Professor Edwina Cornish said the appointment recognised the leading role Professor Horrigan had played in developing the Faculty’s research profile.
“Professor Horrigan brings an outstanding record of leadership and management and is recognised nationally, internationally, and professionally for his expertise in the areas of public and corporate law and governance,” Professor Cornish said.
“I’m sure Professor Horrigan will lead the University’s Faculty of Law with the same merits that defined his tenure as Associate Dean (Research), and that he’ll continue building on the outstanding work of Professor Freiberg.”
Professor Horrigan is an experienced presenter and consultant in work for leading universities, law firms, businesses, and governmental bodies. He was recently appointed by the Australian Government to an expert panel asked to investigate and report on possible reforms to statutory unconscionable conduct and identified behaviours in the franchising industry.
During Professor Arie Freiberg’s term as Dean over the past nine years, the Faculty of Law has developed into one of the largest and most prestigious law schools in Australia, complemented by a broad teaching base, strong international links and an outstanding reputation.
