How to combat antibiotic-resistant superbugs and new strategies to tackle addiction are among research projects by 18 new Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellows at Monash University.

Announced today by the Federal Minister for Science and Research, Senator Chris Evans, Future Fellowships are awarded to the best and brightest mid-career researchers. The scheme promotes research in areas of critical national importance by giving outstanding researchers incentives to conduct their research in Australia.

Monash researchers across five faculties were awarded 18 Fellowships totalling $12.7 million. Three Fellows will join the University to undertake their research projects.

Monash Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy-Vice Chancellor (Research) Professor Edwina Cornish congratulated the Fellows.

"Our 18 new Fellows hail from a variety of disciplines and will be tackling problems from sustainable land management to better understanding consciousness," Professor Cornish said.

"I thank the ARC for acknowledging the breadth of quality research being undertaken at Monash."

Senator Evans announced a total of $151 million to support 209 Future Fellows. Monash University has attracted 67 Future Fellows since the scheme began in 2009.
