New residential accommodation for Clayton campus

The locations of the new residential apartments at Clayton are shown on this map.

New student apartments being planned for the Clayton campus will allow the University to meet demands for residences while continuing to provide a world-class mix of research, education and accommodation.

The development will also underpin the Campus Masterplan and its goal of creating a ‘University City’, in which a growing residential population will support a better retail and services environment and an overall improved campus experience.

The Facilities and Services Division (FSD) and Monash Residential Services (MRS) are working in partnership on the new residential facility, which will be ready for occupation by January 2016.

Design for the 1000 residential apartments (in four new buildings) is under way and construction is expected to commence in July 2014. The four buildings will be constructed in three locations: one on the C2 car park, two on the C11 car park, and one on the E1 car park.

Sustainable design and construction will be central to the project in order to achieve a Green Building Council of Australia’s Green Star ‘5-star As-Built’ rating. Briggs and Jackomos Halls were the first multi-unit residential buildings in Australia to receive this rating. The project will include the expansion and enhancement of the landscape in and around the developments, and a pedestrian walk network will connect the new residences with the surrounding campus.

How will this project impact on Clayton staff and students?

Given the central campus locations of the proposed residential buildings, there will be some impacts on staff and students at the Clayton campus during the construction phase. There may be changes to pedestrian and cycle paths and traffic routes in the vicinity of the construction sites, but alternative routes will be provided and clearly marked. As with any major construction, there is likely to be some disruption from noise; FSD and MRS will work with stakeholders to keep this to a minimum.

As part of this project, the rugby oval situated just north of Union Loop Road will be converted into a temporary car park to partly offset the loss of car parking spaces in car parks C2, C11 and E1. Works to create the new car park will commence in May 2014. Carpooling car parking spaces from C11 will be moved to the South East and North West car parks. There will be further communication about changes to car parking once arrangements have been finalised. Two informal sports courts next to the E1 car park will also be relocated.

FSD will, in time, instigate a fortnightly ‘Project Lookahead’ program to outline project progress and planned impacts – you can subscribe to updates at FSD’s project web page. In addition, FSD and MRS will hold joint Project Presentations at major milestones throughout the project for all Monash stakeholders, particularly those located at the Clayton campus.

This exciting development will help ensure the Clayton campus remains an inspirational, world-class university environment through the coming decades.
