Outstanding contributions to student learning

Four Monash champions of learning and teaching were honoured last week by the Federal Government’s Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) at the Victorian Australian Awards for University Teaching: Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.
Dr Becky Batagol, Faculty of Law, Dr Safeera Hussainy, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dr Kris Ryan, Faculty of Engineering, and Jonathan Teoh, Faculty of Business and Economics, were recognised and rewarded for their exceptional contributions to the quality of student learning.
The afternoon was a celebration of creativity and innovation within universities’ ever-evolving teaching and learning landscape.
Master of Ceremony, Professor Jane den Hollander, Vice-Chancellor and President of Deakin University and member of the OLT’s Advisory Board, congratulated all recipients and urged them to mentor colleagues within their higher education communities.
The Monash recipients were honoured for:
Dr Batagol: Addressing the mental health needs of law students, helping them to successfully complete their studies and transition into legal practice.
Dr Hussainy: Innovative learning and design that guides the development, assessment and feedback of pharmacy students’ communication skills to increase employment readiness and fitness to practice’.
Dr Ryan: Leadership in developing teaching and spaces that promote interactive learning for large classes; and for developing colleagues teaching to inspire our students course-wide.
Mr Teoh: Commitment to developing culturally diverse students to be effective tax accountants through inclusive teaching practices that support equity, course progression and career success.
Other awarded contributions included distinguished postgraduate supervision, fostering a creative culture for music composition students and instigating innovative competitions that leverage industry linkages.
