Everyone has a chance to be an artist at Monash Open Day, with the Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA) inviting attendees to take part in a collaborative painting project.

Graduates from the Monash Faculty of Art Design & Architecture (MADA), artists Renee Cosgrave and Merryn Lloyd were invited by MUMA to produce the project directly on the museum’s foyer windows.

Using a pre-determined design for each of the windows – based on two of the artists’ previous works – and using only small paintbrushes, the designs will first be blocked out on the windows and gradually completed over the course of the day.

“All current and prospective Monash students, their friends, families, and members of the public are invited to participate in our collaborative painting project at MUMA,” Renee said.

Renee and Merryn are looking forward to the way in which the large-scale painting project will enhance their unique gestures as well as the element of risk and unexpectedness through invited audience participation.

“The brushes are small, the area is big. Help us fill the space and complete our most recent collaboration. Each hour a different colour will be introduced,” Merryn said.

“Using a different colour each hour, our intention is to create a giant collaborative colouring-in project on MUMA’s windows.”

MUMA Education Officer, Kate Barber, said this is a wonderful opportunity for prospective Monash students and their families to gain insight into the artists’ thinking and processes.

Merryn Lloyd is a painter who focusses on materials and processes in her work, primarily using beeswax and pigment. Renee Cosgrave makes paintings, drawings and wall works. The two artists met at Monash University where they both studied in the Department of Fine Art and have worked closely together for several years, occasionally collaborating on one-off projects.

The collaborative painting project will take place on Sunday 4 August at Monash University’s Caulfield campus. MUMA will host a program of free, family-friendly and fun activities and events for Open Day.

Monash University Open Day will take place on Saturday 3 (Berwick and Peninsula) and Sunday 4 August (Caulfield, Clayton and Parkville).
